Dahlia tubers

The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico and symbolizes pride and femininity. She certainly exudes that! Plant the dahlia bulbs in your garden and enjoy this versatile, atmospheric flower.

Dahlia flower bulbs in all shapes and colors

Dahlia bulbs produce beautiful flowers in a wide variety of shapes and colors. New varieties are constantly being added. A striking feature of the dahlia are its petals, which are sometimes plain, but can also vary in color with speckles or stripes. Sometimes they have a single row of petals, but sometimes dozens of round, wispy petals. It's incredible that so much beauty can come from dahlia bulbs! Dahlias are available in almost every color, so this stunning flower fits into any garden design. They also make excellent cut flowers. You can use them all summer long, right through to fall, to create the most fantastic, colorful bouquets.

Dahlia flower bulbs

Plant dahlia bulbs in April or May, once the risk of frost has passed. Plant them in a bright, sunny spot in the garden. A little shade isn't a problem, but too much shade will result in drooping stems and fewer flowers. You can also plant the shorter varieties in pots or hang them in window boxes on the balcony. Be sure to use large pots, as dahlia bulbs prefer plenty of space. However, to encourage more blooms and a more robust result, you'll need to intervene at some point. It might seem counterintuitive: the plant is finally growing beautifully and you see the first flower buds, and then you have to cut off the flowers! This is actually the plan, because the more flowers you cut, the more will grow back. New flowers will naturally develop on the side shoots. This way, you can enjoy this wonderful plant even more!

A grateful garden plant

The dahlia bulbs have proven their worth thanks to their many possibilities in the garden, whether as cut flowers or potted plants. The dahlia is an easy and rewarding plant.summer bloomerThere might be a small drawback, though: in the fall, you have to dig up the dahlia bulbs. Store them in a cool, dry place for the winter, and then replant them in the spring. These days, we have fewer and fewer harsh winters. So, you could take the risk and cover the ground with straw, for example. It's a gamble, though, because if there is a hard freeze, the dahlia bulbs won't survive. And let's be honest, wouldn't it be a shame to miss the floral spectacle in the summer?
